Albishorn Marinagraph Review: The Regatta Chronograph That Never Existed - Until Now

October 14, 2025 3 min read

Albishorn Marinagraph in-depth review

Watch enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to timepieces that weave compelling stories with technical excellence and vintage charm. The Albishorn Marinagraph uniquely captivates collectors because it epitomizes the brand's signature "Imaginary Vintage" philosophy, envisioning a tool watch that could have accompanied the crew of the 1958 America's Cup yacht Columbia. This distinctive Swiss timepiece blends the rugged functionality of a skin diver with the precise timing features of a regatta timer - a fusion rarely seen executed so thoughtfully in modern horology.

Watches have long held a special allure for collectors like me, particularly those with rich histories rooted in exploration and competitive sports. From the early diving innovations pioneered mid-20th century to the evolution of timer mechanisms for sailing races, vintage watches offer a tangible link to moments when form met function in the most purposeful ways. Albishorn, a Swiss independent brand helmed by Sébastien Chaulmontet, builds on this heritage by creating "missing links" in horology - homage pieces that never actually existed but which feel so authentic that they might well have.

The Marinagraph stands out with its innovative and patented 10-minute retrograde countdown, designed not to restart endlessly but to halt at zero, giving an immediate visual cue during critical race starts. This is complemented by a monopusher chronograph movement inside, the ALB01 A, which is compact, luxurious, and COSC-certified with an impressive 64-hour power reserve. This caliber showcases Albishorn’s technical prowess in an ultra-thin automatic chronograph just 6.6mm in height, a feat that recalls the slimmer designs of the 1960s while incorporating modern reliability.

When compared to other regatta chronographs or diving watches of similar tier, such as those from Louis Erard or Sinn, the Marinagraph holds its ground through a unique bezel serving dual functions. Its bidirectional aluminum insert tracks tidal cycles over 24 hours rather than simply measuring elapsed dive time, a feature that is genuinely practical for sailors who must constantly monitor changing tides. In addition, the legibility prioritization on the dial is exceptional; unlike many chronographs that sacrifice clarity for complexity, the Marinagraph's layout keeps each element distinct and readable - a crucial attribute for timing marine sport events.

The Marinagraph combines a dual-function bidirectional bezel for 24-hour tidal tracking with exceptional dial legibility for marine timing.

The watch measures a comfortable 39mm in diameter and extends to 42.7mm with its signature bowl-shaped bezel, making for a strong wrist presence without overwhelming. The case's brushed and polished finishes reflect careful craftsmanship, while the 100m water resistance affirms its capability as a practical skin diver. One of my favorite features is the two included tropic-style rubber straps per model, available in color pairs matching the two dial versions - Classic Racing with black and red, or the striking Paraíba Racing with black and white - reinforcing the watch’s sporty yet vintage appeal.

For those who appreciate both technical innovation and historical reverence, the Albishorn Marinagraph represents an extraordinary intersection of craftsmanship and visual storytelling. From my perspective as a watch photographer, it's not merely a watch for divers or competitive sailors; it's a highly photogenic collectible timepiece that recalls a storied past while delivering contemporary performance and versatility.
