Seiko has yet again prepared new additions to their rich catalogue. This time, it's three new members of their long-lived Speedtimer family: SSC941P1, SSC939P1, and SSC943P1. Not only are those Speedtimers, but they are Solar Chronographs as well. Here's what they bring to the table for Seiko Prospex's avid fan base.
Seiko Prospex introduces the larger Speedtimer SSC941P1, SSC939P1, and SSC943P1 solar chronographs, reimagining the contemporary watch for enthusiasts seeking a more commanding presence.
Given Seiko's rich history and constant evolution, it's safe to say that every new watch Seiko releases has large shoes to fill to live up to their predecessors' pedigree and fans' expectations. And those shoes are enormous when it comes to Speedtimer Chronographs. Since the revolutionary Chronograph premiered in 1964 and Speedtimer's debut in 1969, there have been more than four decades of constant improvements to the Chronograph and Speedtimer families. Seiko regularly introduces new additions to these renowned watch series and always has something up their sleeves to keep their fans eagerly awaiting and accepting newcomers.
The previous Seiko Solar Speedtimer Re-Issue models, including
SSC813 and SSC817 both paired with Super-JUB II Watch
Band.
All these Solar Speedtimers are powered by battery-driven solar
cell, making it an accessible chronograph option for those
seeking a watch under $1000.
Time will show if SSC941P1, SSC939P1, and SSC943P1 will also successfully carry their family name. It depends on many factors, and there are no guarantees that it will be so. Still, the first impressions of their looks and features foresee a promising outcome.
All three new Seiko Prospex models share the exact technical specifications, following in the footsteps of their Speedtimer and Chronograph predecessors.
The feature that is instantly noticeable and that separates the three new models from others in the Speedtimer collection is the case diameter. SSC941P1, SSC939P1, and SSC943P1 come with a larger, 41.4mm case size, which adds another dimension to their already prevailing masculine appeal.
Another exciting feature is the tachymetry function. For those unfamiliar with the term, a tachymeter is used to measure the speed of a vehicle over a measured known distance. That's a feature found in technically advanced watches inspired by or dedicated to aviation and race driving, thus making perfect sense. Our featured Speedtimers come with it. If you wish to learn more about the function of tachymetry, check this article.
The Seiko Solar Speedtimer is a modern chronograph, equipped with a tachymeter for measuring speed. To complement the Seiko Solar Speedtimer's motorsport-inspired design, one of the best pairing watch straps is a rally racing strap. On the left is the previous version, the SSC813, while on the right is the SSC817, both paired with Italian handcrafted leather rally straps for an authentic racing aesthetic.
All three models are primarily designed for adrenaline lovers, racing fans, and people on the move in general. Their larger case, build, durability, and water resistance fit the narrative of active lifestyle lovers. To complement that, the recognized Seiko solar-powered movement secures independence and convenience while being a renowned guarantee of precision and trustworthiness.
As mentioned above, all three new Prospex Speedtimers share the same technical features. However, design differences make it easy to distinguish one from the other. These relate to dial, hand, and bezel design, making each watch unique in appearance.
Nicknamed 'Circuit Race', this lovely watch is an hommage to vintage circuit car racing. It has a black dial, bezel, and contrasting white chronograph scale. Finally, the dial elements are characterized by golden plating on the bezel, hands, indexes, crown, and pushers, securing increased visibility under all conditions.
SSC941P1 'Circuit Race' - A charming Solar Speedtimer paying
tribute to the golden age of circuit car racing.
SSC941P1, the dial features exquisite golden plated elements,
exuding elegance and sophistication.
Also known as 'Grand Touring', this novelty speedtimer draws inspiration from vintage muscle cars. The navy blue bezel and gray dial combination pay tribute to those beasts on the road that still go storming down Route 66 and other highways. The beige chronograph scale, hands, and indexes round up the classic motorsport design from the 70s, leaving no doubt whatsoever where the idea for the design of this watch originated.
SSC939P1 'Grand Touring' - This new Solar Speedtimer takes its
cues from the iconic muscle cars of yesteryear.
SSC939P1, the striking combination of a navy blue bezel and
gray dial honors the powerful machines that continue to
dominate Route 66 and beyond.
Also called 'Racing Sports', the last of the three newest Prospex Solar Speedtimers was inspired by the lightweight sports cars of vintage classic motorsport. It's characterized by an ivory-colored dial, hands, and indexes, complemented by a contrasting deep blue subdials, black chronograph scale and dark green bezel.
Vintage-inspired colors in all three models add unique charm and provide a fruitful ground for a wide range of strap combinations, another great feature of the newcomer Seiko Solar Speedtimer trio.
SSC943P1 'Racing Sports' - The final addition to the Prospex
Solar Speedtimer trio, inspired by the sleek and agile
sports cars of classic motorsport.
SSC943P1, an ivory-colored dial, hands, and indexes are
beautifully contrasted by deep blue subdials, a black
chronograph scale, and a rich green bezel.
Their release date is set to June 2024, which is just around the corner and somewhat eases the suspense felt in the air around the avid Speedtimer fan base. The announced price of these three models ranges from $740 to $780.

Continuing from the previous Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph review, we now have an exciting new addition to the lineup. Launched in the wake of its predecessors, this latest model draws inspiration from the iconic "Pogue" chronograph, featuring a stunning golden yellow sunray tone dial.
The "Pogue" nickname originates from the Seiko ref. 6139 6002 chronograph, famously worn by astronaut Colonel William Pogue on the Skylab space station in 1973. Alongside his NASA-approved Speedmaster, Pogue secretly brought this vibrant Seiko timepiece, earning it the distinction of being the first automatic chronograph in space.
This cult classic, with its multi-colored quirkiness and robust build, has long been a holy grail for Seiko enthusiasts. While original pieces can still be found for under £1,000, they often show signs of wear. The watch community has been eagerly awaiting a reissue of this space-traveling legend.
Now, Seiko has answered these calls with the Prospex Speedtimer 'Pogue' Solar Chronograph ref. SSC947P1. This new model joins the existing Solar Chronograph range, which includes the SSC943P1 (Racing Sports), SSC939P1 (Grand Touring), and SSC941P1 (Circuit Race). While not an exact reissue, it captures the essence of the original Pogue, bringing its sunny demeanor and space-age charm to a new generation of watch enthusiasts.
