Two Striking New Seiko Sumo Chronographs - SSC757 and SSC807

With spring finally in full bloom and summer just around the corner, it comes naturally that we’re all thinking about a fresh change of outlook. Apart from taking out light material clothing from out closets, the warm weather makeover also invites changes in the accessories that accompany our apparel.

If you plan on expanding your current collection with a watch that perfectly fits the warm part of the year, you’re at the right place to read about two great options. Seiko SSC757J1 and SSC807J1, two of the latest Seiko Prospex Sumo chronograph editions, are the new members of the Seiko Solar family who more than capable of meeting all your needs.

Let’s begin with a bit of background, followed by the technical specs and individual features of these two Seiko sumo chronograph watches.

A short background of Seiko Sumo Solar Chronograph SSC757J1 and SSC807J1

• In 1964, celebrating the Tokyo Olympic Games as the official timekeeper, Seiko presented the first Japanese wristwatch that features a stopwatch.
• In 1969, Seiko introduced the first automatic chronograph watch that featured a vertical clutch and column wheel.
• At the end of the same year, Seiko introduced to the world the first Quartz watch ever produced.
• In 1977, Seiko introduced their first-ever Solar watch.

All these marvels of wristwatch craftsmanship are the force behind both Sumo Chronograph watches we’re presenting today. And, you noticed well, the Sumo element isn’t a part of the bullet list above. And, for a good reason.

Neither SSC757J1 nor SSC807J1 are, in fact, Sumos. They were immediately nicknamed as such by Seiko fans, and very often, sellers listed them as such, but they are not a part of the Sumo line.

They got their Sumo nickname for having the same style 12 o’clock hour marker all watches from the Sumo collection have. Still, apart from other differences, there’s a crucial one between the Sumo’s and our two featured watches. Sumo watches have automatic mechanisms, while SSC757J1 and SSC807J1 have solar ones.

Now that we’re at home with the background and inspiration behind the design of the SSC757J1 and SSC807J1 let’s deal with their common and individual features.

• Stainless Steel Case, 44.5mm diameter and 13.7mm thick
• Sapphire Crystal glass
• LumiBrite on hands, indexes, and bezel
• Numberless dial
• Solar-powered Quartz movement, with ±15 seconds per month accuracy and approximately six months of operation (when fully charged)
• Unidirectional rotating bezel
• Screw case back and Screw-down crown
• Stainless Steel watch strap with a three-fold clasp with a secure lock and a push-button release with extender
• Chronograph up to 60 minutes in 1/5 second increments, with screw-down chronograph pushers on either side of the crown.
• Three black sub-dials, with a display function of resuming electric power generation positioned above the 6 o’clock mark.
• 200m water resistance

Timeless elegance emphasized by a Rollball stainless steel watch band

Seiko Sumo chronograph SSC757J1, was released in 2022. It comes with a black dial, and has immediatelly grabbed attention of Seiko fans worldwide.

The Sumo chronograph SSC807, which became available in March 2021, is one of three new pieces in the Prospex collection dedicated to the celebration of 140 years of Seiko watchmaking. It’s a limited edition watch, inspired by Seiko 1968 divers, with only 4000 pieces produced. As we said before, the SSC757J1 and SSC807J1 have identical technical and design features. However, there are four differences. The SSC807J1 features:

• the green dial instead of black featured on the SSC757J1
• it’s a limited edition, marked by LIMITED EDITION engraving on the case back, with only 4000 pieces produced
• has a higher price and demand, both thanks to the first two differences
• comes with an additional silicone strap

Bright future ahead

Looking at any Seiko Sumo chronograph review, it’s safe to assume that these two watches are guaranteed to be in high demand, too. As we mentioned before, they are not really Sumos. Still, apart from other things they have in common, they share a premium feature of timeless elegance and masculine appearance. Combined with the fact that they’re easy and comfortable to wear, the future is bright for these Seiko chronograph, as well.
